Kieran O’Loughlin
Kieran O’Loughlin (He or They)
I am a counsellor, psychotherapist and life coach working with individuals, and
people in intimate relationships (both monogamous and non-monogamous).
I work from a client-centred perspective with a strong emphasis on helping
individual clients to build self-awareness, connect with their deepest values and
overcome internal obstacles to make life choices that express these values.
As a relationship therapist, I also work to develop and deepen the bond that will
help the relationship become stronger and more intimate or else to allow it to end
in a healthy way.
In all of my work I place a strong emphasis on clients being fully present to
themselves and their aspirations, and on incorporating compassion for self and
others into their lives so that they are able to fulfill their potential as human beings.
After working for thirty years as a teacher with secondary and adult students, and
then as an academic at the University of Melbourne, I re-trained as a counsellor and
psychotherapist. As well as my private practice work I have wide-ranging experience
as a counsellor and clinical supervisor of other counsellors in the community health
sector.
I have a very strong commitment to working with clients from the Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) communities across the full lifespan. I
have specialist skills in counselling for HIV prevention and support and I have co-
facilitated groups for individuals who have lived long-term with HIV, who are
suffering from anxiety, who are limited by internalised homophobia and who are
perpetrators of intimate partner violence.
In my client work I select from a range of approaches (as appropriate) especially
Existential, Emotion-Focused, Acceptance & Commitment (including Mindfulness),
Interpersonal and Psychodynamic therapies as well as Motivational Interviewing. My
focus in therapy is on finding the right approach for every individual client or couple.
