Trish Thompson(she/her)

I have worked as a counsellor and psychotherapist for over 25 years. I work with
individuals, couples, other relationship structures and also facilitate group therapy.
Through my work for many years at an LGBTQI+ counselling service, and my close
connections with family members and friends who are part of diverse communities,
I have strived for an ongoing awareness and understanding of my occupancy of
cisgender, heteronormative and other privileges.

Experience tells me that clients want to feel comfortable and safe in opening up and
talking about things they may not have shared with anyone else. I value the trust
clients place in me and want them to know that I consider their wellbeing to be of
the utmost importance. My goal is to work in partnership with my clients to assist
them to live a life of their choosing, and to overcome barriers that come in the form
of anxiety, depression, anger and low self-worth.

While my training is based in client-centred and emotion-focused practice, I feel that
it is important to cater to the needs of my clients. This means that I might draw from
a number of approaches, whether that be mindfulness-based therapy or solution
focused, for example. To me it is about helping clients to engage with their
strengths in all forms – emotional, cognitive and intuitive, in order to create the
change they desire.

I have worked in a number of settings over the years, including schools, community-
based organisations and in private practice. I have taught counselling subjects at
university level and I am an accredited counselling supervisor. I enjoy being part of a
therapeutic community that works together and supports its members in providing
quality care for our clients.

I have also been involved in the area of family violence for many years, as a
facilitator of Men’s Behaviour Change programs, as well as counselling clients
affected by family violence. As a relationship counsellor, I naturally have a strong
interest in how we live our lives in the context of our connections with other people.
It’s not only about the relationships we have with partners, but also with family
members, friends and work colleagues. I am committed to supporting my clients in
having the relationships that work best for them. This might be about developing
better communication patterns, or perhaps exploring what it means to be authentic
and real when in relationship with a partner/partners and others.
